Buy a Trailer or Rent a House?

I am visiting my family after 6 years of living outside of the U.S.. The choices for me are:
Stay with relatives
Buy a trailer
or Rent a house.

I will only be in the states for a month and I will be returning to my never ending travels and pursuit of adventure.
It would cost me about 2,000 US to rent a partially furnished house for a month.
or
I can buy a cheap trailer (yes it is a nice one) for the same amount.

I don’t want to stay with family. I like them, but there is a reason I travel around. I don’t like being around people constantly and find that traveling lets me be alone in a way that can not be achieved when surrounded by family.

I own land in the U.S. and purchasing the trailer would add some value to my land, as it is considered an improvement. This would be a real investment. However, empty trailers do tend to attract problems. I would be leaving after a month. On the other hand, I have someone who has said that they would watch and care for it when I am not there (as in use it but make sure not to trash it). The trailer is a single wide, formerly lived in, in good shape and great condition. I have even had it inspected. It is worth a LOT more than they are willing to sell it to me for. More importantly, it would be there when I finally return to the states permanently. Which I do plan to do but not for several years more. I like it out here.

If I rent a house there is no investment. But there is also no muss, no fuss. It would be a quick rental and give me a place to go to take a breath as I am visiting the relatives. Utilities would be included and once I leave I don’t have to think about it again.

I am torn.

And I could really use the advice.
Thanks in advance.

I am always for investing! Rent isn’t investing anything.

SO, if you could find a "caretaker" to live in the trailer and take care of it then you win in the long run! ! ! Probably would add a value of $10,000 to the land????

Apartment or House?

I am moving. I have three options. An apartment, A travel trailer, or A house.

An expensive high lined apartment with all the bells and whistles.
A travel trailer fairly new (the kind you go on the road with, option to buy it within a year and own a vacation home !).
A house as a rental, kinda old style, simple, not very snazzy.

Which would you choose and why?

I’m actually torn right now, the apartment is fun, the house is economical (maybe?), the travel trailer I would OWN.
The apartment is possible to lease longer but has no value after a year of payments, the house a possiblity to buy (long commitment.) therefore gaining with the payments but slowly, and travel trailer would be small and cramped but owned and capable of being used for ten more years as a vacation on wheels!
let me clarify, I will rent for the next fifteen years, hubby is Milatary (we have retirement in fifteen years) and I’m not throwing money away, we move every three years, thats alot of work to own a house, can cause huge issues. Taxes, up keep, on a small paycheck. The year of renting happens regardless, the travel trailer would be owned after one year. The house perhaps 1/10 th owned, and the apartment nothing but it offers the nicest amenities and is the most affordable. So, pros and cons besides loss of money (obvious…;} thanks)

Before you listen to all the HOUSE HOUSE HOUSE people, consider that owning is also a liability. Meaning if something breaks you get to fix it. Think increments of thousands. If your budget doesnt allow you to handle that, the house isnt the best way to go. Appreciation isnt guranteed anymore, and its a rough market to sell. I’ve seen transferees have to leave their houses empty on the market around here for nearly a year, and they surely had ot pay to live somewhere else. It is worth checking to see what provisions the military will provide to support transfers. Also how much stuff do you have, how much stuff do you want to haul around with you?
I think I’d choose the apartment if the region had nasty storms, and maybe the travel trailer if i had a nice place to put it and could customize the crap out of it. (again, budget permitting).
If the house was solid, in a nice enough neighborhood and the market was doing ok, then I’d consider the house.
But overall, Id lean towards the apartment. Some else can come fix the toilet. And you get closet space.
Good luck!!

Uhaul trailer issues?

I recently rented a uhaul trailer to travel from pa to fl and back over a month long period. I made total payments of $1200 and then my car started to have problems And I was unable to tow it back. I called the original location and they had told me I can drop it off at any uhaul location. I did so only to be called the next day saying I owe another $1300 since it wAs switched to a one way rental. Does this amount seem correct? And after paying $800 last week I am unable to pay the $1300 right away. What happens if my balance becomes past due ?

I would contest that amount. Explain to them that you do not have that much money since it was an unexpected situation. However, if you read the fine print in a Uhaul contract you will see that you are responsible for everything and Uhaul is responsible for nothing. If you are unable to pay the amount right away, also discuss that with them and make arrangements so that it will not become an issue.

I am currently renting a trailer home from a woman here in Big Lake Texas. She is renouned for being a pest and an aweful landlord. Here is my main situation and then some questions, if you KNOW the answers, please post, if not, don’t just guess, thank you!

1) I have to pay my own utilities (All of them)
2) I am responsible for my own lawn care, even though every other lot (With travel trailers, not mobile homes) are mowed by the landlord
3) She constantly comes over and bugs me.
4) When she made out the lease, she left the end date open.

Questions:

Is she required by law to pay ANY of my utilities? I pay gas, sewer, garbage disposal, electric and water.

Is she allowed, by law, to enter my property on a monthly basis to perform an "inspection" of the premesis? It is not in the lease as far as I can tell

How can I demand she stops doing anything she’s not allowed to without her simply writing in next month as my lease end?

PLEASE HELP! I can’t stand it anymore, and
there are litterally no more rental properties available in this town of 2500 people. I cannot move anywhere else as the next large town is 70 miles away and I work 15 hours a day.

I do not want this woman coming into my home on a monthly basis, there is no need for it, and it’s very intrusive, yet I’m scared to stand up to her for fear of losing my home.

Thank you for answering!

Does she give you at least a days notice before entering the property? If so she is within the law.

What does the lease indicate about utilities?

She may just be trying to get rid of you for whatever reason.

I will be traveling 1,200 miles and mostly boxes..packing my car too with as much…can i tow safely a uhaul rental trailer that is one of their smaller ones?..4by8 i believe it is.

I am not wishing to ruin my car, or have an accident. But since I will not be bringing more than small stuff..a mattress at the most in furniture and basically boxes..of stuff..was much cheaper renting a trailer to tow.

Yes you can tow the 4×8 uhaul trailer with your Corrola. However, you must install a hitch, trailer light wiring, receiver, and a trailer ball which is a permanent cost to you. As long as the lighter stuff goes in the trailer with the most heaviest products near the center but not behind the center axel of the trailer you will not have any problems. Now – this is my personal opinion, but rent the smaller truck with a tow dolly for your car. It might cost a bit more but it will be ALOT less stress (both on you and your car). Also going that way saves those 1200 miles ware and tare on your car. Let the uhaul truck take the abuse ;-P Either way you chose, have a safe trip.

In todays local news, FEMA will begin charging the rsidents of Greensburg $667 a month to stay in the trailers provided to them due to the tornado.

Katrina victims have yet to pay a cent for the trailers they still reside in, 3 years after the calamity of Katrina.

How can the feds explain this bold, yet almighty ignorant move?

They do not charge the Katrina victims for their trailers, and then buy/rent houses and apartments for them until 3/09, up to 1200 a month!

The following was released by FEMA Oct 1st 2008, and is cut and pasted directly from their website.
NEW ORLEANS, La. — The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) are working together to find apartments to house the anticipated 2,000 families that will be moving out of travel trailers or mobile homes and entering the rental housing market. In order to do that, they are asking landlords to register their available rental units to help link families with homes.

FEMA, through HUD’s Disaster Housing Assistance Program (DHAP), will pay landlords housing DHAP participants up to 120 percent of the fair market rental rate. In Orleans Parish, for example, FEMA will pay up to $1,188.00 per month for a two bedroom apartment. Payments will be made through March of 2009.

Individual support continues with nearly $1.3 billion to individuals and families:

274,758 individuals and families have been approved for the Individuals and Households Program (IHP) totaling more than $1.2 billion;
216,557 individuals and families have been approved for Housing Assistance totaling more than $851 million;
134,892 Mississippians have been approved for more than $416 million in Other Needs Assistance (ONA);
3,627 temporary housing units (travel trailers and mobile homes) in service. More than 39,000 units have been deactivated;
2,235 total occupied units in the three lower counties.
Hancock 507
Harrison 1,171
Jackson 557
More than 2,800 Mississippi families who are Katrina survivors have moved from FEMA temporary housing to a Mississippi Cottage. The Mississippi Cottage is a part of the Mississippi Alternative Housing Program, which is administered by MEMA and is funded by a $280 million federal grant.

WHen will this idiocracy STOP?!

I bet the best answer would be the fact that ther population of Greensburg was 99% white, working class individuals.
Whereas, Katrina victims are 98% BLACK, welfare recipient, pieces of trash. I know a cop that spent time in the Superdome with all the "refugees".
Rape, murder, theft, drugs……..thats what they did down there….not to mention the fact that they are slobs who expected the relief workers to pick up the mess they made and be waited on hand and foot

They are disgusting, and so is what FEMA is trying to pull here!

Hi – We are new to this whole RV thing – my wife and I are planning to buy a travel trailer and wanted to spend 2-3 months down south this winter (from about Dec until March) – Florida would be our first choice, especially on/near water. Please have some patience as we’re new to all this & know nothing about costs, best way to do it, etc. So far, in browsing various RV parks or state parks in Florida that rent out lot spaces overnight for travel trailers, we have found that the rent per day is Surprisingly expensive !! Wow. I was thinking that rental rates would be reasonable, like 150 or 200 a month to park your trailer. But I am finding prices routinely of 25-30 dollars a night ($900 a month !!) I had No idea rv parks charged that much. That really shocked us. Is there some other way or something we don’t know about in renting spaces in RV parks such that we could find something much more reasonable ?? Now we are second guessing our entire plan and thinking heck it would be about the same price or possibly even cheaper to just rent a small place in Florida for a couple of months over the winter (especially considering all the empty & vacant real estate in Florida right now, Landlords are desperate for renters down there). Well, any ideas, experiences, suggestions from seasoned RV and travel-trailer veterans on this high lot rental cost issue would be greatly appreciated !!!!

Yahoo has a forum for RVers, people are very helpful on there..check it out.
But in general if you specify you want a seasonal site at a campground the cost is usually cheaper.
Another way to go are to use state parks, they don’t always have cable or WIFI but will have electric and sewer on some sites.
Don’t give up!
Camping is a great thing to do, and a travel trailer is the best way to do it (in my opinion anyway) we have a 32′ travel trailer and absolutely love it and camping.

Good luck

EDIT: Go to yahoo groups..then travel then navagate from there, depending on what part of the country you are interested in. I use East Coast RVing. Check out NEW SMYRNA BEACH campground and RV park, Jan, Ferb and March rates are as of now $520.00 + 12% tax a month.
It includes electric AC and I forget what else!

hey! i am from germany and i’m going to canada / calgary next year where i want to travel around with 4 friends in the trailer of my uncle. the only problem is, to find a car with a trailer hitch… i ‘ve still been looking around for a few days but until now i couldn’t find a car rental that offers cars equppied with a hitch.
it would be great if someone could give me an advice where i can get cars with a hitch!
thx for all efforts and merry christmas 2 u all!

I don’t know how they do things in Germany, but in North America, car rental agencies don’t let you tow trailers with their automobiles. In fact, there is usually a provision in the rental contract that PROHIBITS towing another vehicle.

If you can afford it, you might try to shop around some local auto dealerships to find an appropriate tow vehicle (used car or pickup), and then arrange with the dealer for a short-term lease.

My partner and I want to go home to my mom’s place in the Sandhills of Seguin for a week. The house though is not big enough for us to stay in and we DO NOT want to stay in a hotel. The goal is to be home, not in the city. We would appreciate any input regarding travel trailer/RV rentals in the Seguin area. The first or second week of March is when we intend to be at Mom’s place. Even if you know someone independent of a dealer, that would be delightful. We can discuss rates, etc. Again, any leads would be fantastic! Thanks! =^..^=

The nearest place to Seguin to rent an RV is going to be in San Antonio. I found a couple places you might try.
